苏轼,字子瞻、和仲,号铁冠道人、东坡居士,世称苏东坡、苏仙他不仅是天才文学家、艺术家,是中国历史上少有的全才,也是一位旷达的乐天派,正是这种达观的个性加上精深的文学造诣,使他成为历代人民喜爱的历史人物林语堂在《苏东坡传》里这样写道:“具有一个多才多艺的天才的深厚、广博、诙谐,有高度的智力,有天真烂漫的赤子之心……这些品质荟萃于一身,是天地间的凤毛麟角,不可数见。
苏东坡正是此等人,他保持天真淳朴,终身不渝”这一波夸呀,可见在林语堂眼中,苏轼是一位前无古人后无来者的全才没错了!然而翻到《苏东坡传》的封面,却发现书名非常瞩目——The Gay Genius林语堂笔下的苏东坡怎么成了“Gay Genius”呢?。
著名作家、翻译家林语堂一生用英文创作多部著作,其中《苏东坡传》更是被誉为“中国现代长篇传记开标立范之作”所以不要质疑,这区区书名肯定不会搞错那是怎么回事呢?原来,在那个时候,gay还没有“同性恋”的意思,而是指“快乐的、有趣的”之类的意思。

他的名声渐传渐远,后来许多年长的人都来向他请教学问听多了众人的夸奖,再加上自家书房中已经找不到没读过的书了,苏轼渐渐骄傲起来,认为自己从先秦诸子百家到汉唐诗赋都很精通在这种自满情绪的支配下,他得意洋洋地在自己书房挂了一副对联:“识遍天下字,读尽人间书。
”Su Shi showed himself to be of high intelligence even as a child; he had mastered reading by the age of seven, and composition by the age of ten. He often gave voice to finely-wrought utterances. His reputation gradually spread far and wide, so much so that adults came to consult him on literary matters. There was not a book in the library at home that he had not read.
Su Shi often heard himself praised by the local people, and in consequence grew quite arrogant, regarding himself as ranking with the famous philosophers of pre-Qin times and other leading scholars down to the prose-poem masters of the Han and Tang dynasties. It was this kind of self-conceit that led him to hang in his study a couplet which read: “I know all the words under Heaven/I have read the writings of all men.”
一天,一位老人拿着一本书上门求教,他说:“我问过很多人,他们都不认得这本书上的字我听说你很博学,便来向你请教” 苏轼很自信地接过老人手里的书,但翻开书看了一会儿就呆了,因为这本书他不但没看过,而且也有很多字都不认识。
这一刻,他明白自己其实还有很多需要学习的东西面对老人满含希望的眼睛,他只好惭愧地摇了摇头One day an old man came to Su Shis door with a book, and asked for advice. "I have consulted many people," he explained, "but none of them could understand its meaning. I have heard that you are a person of wide learning, and so I have come to ask you." Full of confidence, Su Shi took the book from the old mans hand, but, upon opening it, he stopped, dumbfounded: Not only had he never seen this book before, there were many characters in it which he did not know! At this moment, Su Shi realized that there were many more things which he had to learn. As the old man gazed at him expectantly, Su Shi could only shake his head, at a loss.
通过这件事,苏轼意识到自己以前那么骄傲实在不应该他又想起自己那令人脸红的对联,便连忙回到书房,准备扯下来但就在动手的一瞬间,他忽然停住了他略一思索,在上下联的前面各加两字,然后端详一番,满意地摊开书本,发愤用功去了。
原来,这副对联变成了:“发愤识遍天下字,立志读尽人间书”This event taught Su Shi that his previous assumption of arrogance had been inapproprite. He suddenly thought of that now embarrassing couplet, and straightaway hurried to his study, and prepared to take it down. But at this very moment, a thought struck him: He should add two characters to both lines of the couplet. So he set to work, and finally the couplet read:"Resolve to know all the words under Heaven/Make it your ambition to read the writings of all men."
