Family genealogy connects Taiwan to MainlandGenealogy is a record of a familys lineage, tracing its origins and ancestors.

In recent years, social media platforms have provided help for many people in Taiwan to find their roots on the mainland.

Lai Lai from Taiwan has been working in Beijing since 2019. She traveled in September to the coastal province of Fujian, just across the Taiwan Strait, hoping to find her familys ancestral home.

"This is a wish inherited for several generations, so I feel it wont be easy to realize it. My father told me that his uncle kept talking about the wish before he died."

Her father had left her an address and she posted the information online.To her surprise, many people immediately offered help to locate the address, and even helped her to get in touch with people there.

The location turned out to be a small village named Xintian in Zhangzhou, southern Fujian.By examining her family genealogy and local documents, Lai Lai found that 93 of her ancestors had migrated from the small village to Taiwan several hundred years ago.

"I dont know how to describe my feelings when I found the place. In short, I felt it was so cool to be where my ancestors lived. After more than three hundred years, we passed on our ancestors genes from generation to generation and still carry their DNA."

But many are not as lucky as Lai Lai in tracing their family lineage.One issue is address verification. Many places have changed names over time.

Another issue is that some genealogies are difficult to read.Lai Hanzhong is the head of the Lai Family Association in Fujian. He says though many people in Taiwan have come back almost every year to look up their family lineage since 1987, young people today are not that interested in preserving genealogy.

"If we dont revise the family genealogy, over the next few generations, there may be a significant number of descendants living in other places who will forget their roots. The family rules and mottos preserved in the family genealogy can be used to build a good family environment, and that is also conducive to building a harmonious society."

To better preserve the family genealogy, Lai Hanzhong has mobilized some locals to collect genealogical information in nearby villages and digitize the documents.
